Open Lab Idaho is Live!

Posted January 16, 2012

On Saturday, January 14th, Open Lab Idaho had its first meeting as a "formalized" organization.  We want to thank everybody who showed up and and especially thank all the people committed to making Open Lab Idaho a reality. Check out the details after the break!

Costs for 501c3 Nonprofit status are at $800; a one-time fee.  To make this leap, the membership dues are currently set at $35/mo. with $20 for location and utilities, and the rest for nonprofit filing cost, insurance, and the establishment of a general fund.

After the initial (read: boring) part of the meeting, the group moved to projects.  The majority of work currently going on is the proliferation of RepRap, with at least five machines making an appearance.  An ultraportable laser engraver is in the works as well as "translucent concrete" and a $30 projector TV.

One of the more ambitious projects being the potato powered NSLU2.  Although this particular project met defeat at the high resistance of galvanized nails, it is this kind of creativity OpenLab encourages and hopes will persist in the years to come.

The board is encouraging people to come out every Saturday around 6pm to show off what they are working on.  These meetings are informal and attendance is not required, but encouraged as a regular meeting and sharing of ideas.  Weekends with an emphasis on certain kinds of projects to come later.

Thank you all for all the support, and don't forget to sign up on our forums!  We hope to see you there!
